Soapland
A historically specific Japanese term for a category of bathing-related adult business — a word to explain, not a listing to follow.
What it means
Soapland names a particular legal-cultural category within Japan's wider adult nightlife vocabulary. It is not a synonym for the sex industry as a whole, and it is not a media format. JPGRL records the term because English-language internet culture repeats it constantly and usually out of context.
Origin
The present sense of the word took shape under postwar legal arrangements that separated, renamed, and regulated different kinds of adult business. Like many such terms, it is a product of law and euphemism as much as of popular speech.
Cultural context
The word can appear in news reports, comedy, and ordinary knowledge. Tone ranges from matter-of-fact to stigmatizing. It is not, in serious Japanese usage, a tourist genre name — even if overseas writing treats it that way.
