Soapland
A historically specific Japanese term for a category of bathing-related adult business — a word to explain, not a listing to follow.
What it means
Soapland names a particular legal-cultural category within Japan's wider adult nightlife vocabulary. It is not a synonym for the sex industry as a whole, and it is not a media format. JPGRL records the term because English-language internet culture repeats it constantly and usually out of context.
History / origin
The present sense of the word took shape under postwar legal arrangements that separated, renamed, and regulated different kinds of adult business. Like many such terms, it is a product of law and euphemism as much as of popular speech.
How the term is used in Japan
