Eroge
A Japanese portmanteau for erotic games, usually narrative computer games with adult scenes.
What it means
Eroge names a software and fan culture with its own platforms, ratings, and story conventions. It overlaps with anime and manga fandom but is not identical with AV.
History / origin
Personal-computer hobby culture and later console-adjacent markets supported erotic adventure and visual-novel forms. Distribution, age gates, and localizer debates became part of the public story.
How the term is used in Japan
Japanese speakers may use eroge casually for adult games. Overseas discourse sometimes treats the word as a genre promise rather than a market category.

- Eroge is not another word for AV.
