Glossary

Cabaret Club

A nightlife form related to hostess entertainment, sometimes used interchangeably with kyabakura in loose speech.

What it means

Cabaret club points to showier or more formal ends of hostess nightlife in some local usages, while other speakers treat it as a synonym. The instability of the English-Japanese mapping is itself a glossary problem.

History / origin

Twentieth-century cabaret imported and reinvented Western entertainment words. Japanese cabaret culture then specialized.

How the term is used in Japan

Readers should check context: age of the text, city, and whether the speaker means variety stage or hostess seating.

Common misunderstandings

  • Cabaret club is not automatically a strip theater.
  • It is not AV production.
  • Word overlap with Western cabaret can mislead tourists and translators.
