Hokkaido & Tohoku

Hokkaido

Cold-climate capital nightlife centered on Sapporo’s Susukino.

Hokkaido’s entertainment-district story is unusually concentrated: Susukino in Sapporo is one of Japan’s few kanrakugai names that travel nationally as a proper noun, beside Kabukicho and Nakasu. Outside Sapporo, prefectural cities such as Asahikawa, Hakodate, and Kushiro often show a classic regional pattern — a station-adjacent late strip rather than a nationally mythologized quarter. Tourism and winter isolation both shape how the night economy is narrated: dense in the capital, thinner and more local elsewhere. In domestic industry speech Susukino is also counted among Japan’s best-known soapland-district names — a national proper noun, not only a drinking quarter.
